How Artificial Intelligence is Revolutionising Mental Health for Diverse Communities
A diverse group of individuals sitting in a virtual therapy session.
As a therapist dedicated to fostering understanding, empathy, and cultural competence, I have consistently recognised intersecting identities' unique challenges and strengths. My practice, Bempong Talking Therapy (BTT), was founded on these principles. In this ever-evolving landscape of mental health care, I've embraced a new collaborator that has revolutionised my approach: artificial intelligence (AI).
This cutting-edge tool, trained on the rich tapestry of experiences within the UK's communities, has expanded my understanding. It allows me to view my clients through a sophisticated lens that reveals the intricate interplay of race, gender, class, sexuality, and other factors that shape their lives.
To understand the potential of this technology, take a look at the video "AI and mental health: Young people turning to AI therapist bots | BBC News":
AI and mental health: Young people turning to AI therapist bots BBC News video
This BBC video delves into how the NHS uses AI chatbots to address the growing waitlist for mental health support. It explores the potential benefits and limitations of AI in therapy and raises essential questions about the role of technology in mental health care.
While AI is not a replacement for human therapists, it's a powerful tool that can enhance our understanding and delivery of therapy, making mental health support more accessible and personalised for diverse individuals.
Embracing Diversity in a Digital World
In my online practice, I encounter individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their geographical location. From young Black professionals navigating corporate spaces to members of the LGBTQ+ community seeking acceptance, each person brings unique experiences and challenges. The AI assists me in understanding these nuances, recognising how different aspects of identity intersect and influence a person's mental well-being. It helps me ask the right questions, challenge my biases, and create a safe space where everyone feels genuinely seen and heard.
To illustrate the importance of cultural sensitivity in therapy, watch this insightful video from the American Psychological Association:
This video by the APA discusses the importance of cultural competence and diversity in mental health care. It highlights how understanding and respecting cultural differences can lead to better patient outcomes and a more equitable healthcare system.
"AI has the potential to bridge the gap in mental health care by recognising and addressing the unique cultural contexts of individuals,"

The Power of AI Augmentation
Imagine an AI that understands the cultural nuances of a Caribbean family dynamic or the challenges faced by a neurodivergent individual in a fast-paced environment. By leveraging this technology, I'm able to:
Tailor my interventions,
Suggest culturally relevant coping mechanisms,
And even bridge communication gaps by translating complex emotions into a client's native language.
This is the transformative potential of intersectional AI. But its impact extends far beyond the therapy room. In the workplace, embracing cultural consciousness can increase employee satisfaction, productivity, and innovation.
"When there's an environment primed for well-being at work, it creates a little uplift. We spend so many hours at work...if our work environment challenges us to navigate difficult conversations or always have to explain ourselves constantly...we only have 20% of our mental capacity to do our work."

Award-Winning Innovation
My passion for integrating AI and cultural consciousness into mental health care has not gone unnoticed. I was recently honoured as the LCCI SME London Businessperson of the Year 2024 and a finalist for Various awards at the Black Tech Achievement Awards, the SME National Business Awards, and the Black Talent Awards 2024. These recognitions highlight the growing importance of this innovative approach in addressing the mental health needs of diverse communities.
A Journey of Personal Awakening
My journey began long before my role as a catalyst for cultural consciousness and intersectionality in mental health care was truly awakened. A pivotal moment occurred during a mandatory therapy session with Holly, a middle-aged, middle-class white woman from Somerset, my appointed therapist for the college's subsidised counselling program.
Jarell Bempong sits in a classroom, the portraits of Freud and Jung looming on the wall behind him.
This experience was particularly striking due to the context: I found myself on a psychotherapy course predominantly developed and taught by white men, mirroring the historical biases prevalent in psychology since the times of colonialism and slavery. My tutors and peers were predominantly white, with only the occasional person of colour present. The curriculum, bafflingly, lacked any meaningful discussion about race, culture, intersectionality, or cultural intelligence.
As I passionately expressed my thoughts and emotions during that session with Holly, I couldn't help but notice a subtle shift in her demeanour. Her discomfort was palpable, and she misinterpreted my passion and intensity as aggression. It was a stark realisation of how the intersection of race, culture, and mental health could be misunderstood and even invalidated within a system not designed to understand my experiences. But rather than feeling defeated, I was determined to use this experience as a catalyst for change.
"The key benefits of cultural consciousness in the workplace are immense. Employee satisfaction and well-being are deeply connected. A culturally conscious workplace creates an environment primed for well-being, increasing satisfaction and productivity. If we constantly navigate difficult conversations or have to prove ourselves due to stereotypes, it hinders our ability to think creatively and reach our full potential."
The Importance of Cultural Consciousness in the Workplace
In this video, I discuss the crucial role of cultural consciousness in fostering inclusive and empathetic work environments.

The Birth of Bempong Talking Therapy
My initial foray into addressing these challenges was the establishment of Bempong Talking Therapy (BTT). This groundbreaking model addresses the unique mental health needs of marginalised communities, including Black individuals and other minority groups. Its strength lies in its culturally competent approach, which considers these communities' specific cultural, social, and historical contexts in therapy. BTT not only recognises but actively confronts systemic biases and cultural misunderstandings that hinder access to mental health care. This tailored approach fosters empathy, relevance, and accessibility, significantly improving outcomes for marginalised populations.

Leadership and Advocacy
My mission extends beyond the therapy room. As a bestselling author and a leading figure in DEEI (Diversity, Equity, Equality, and Inclusion) initiatives, I've always sought to bridge the gap between personal experience and empathetic insight. My work as a keynote speaker and leadership development facilitator allows me to empower organizations to embrace inclusivity and mental wellness.
