The Link Between LGBTQIA+ Inclusion and Employee Engagement
LGBTQIA+ inclusion isn't about ticking boxes but creating a space where everyone thrives. When employees feel seen, heard, and respected for who they are, they become more engaged, motivated, and productive. Here's the impact:
Enhanced Psychological Safety: Employees who can express their identities without fear experience lower stress and higher job satisfaction, leading to increased innovation and creativity (Sreeram & Thomas, 2023).
Higher Retention Rates: Inclusive workplaces see reduced turnover as employees are likelier to stay with companies that value and support their authentic selves (Hur, 2020).
Improved Team Dynamics: Diversity brings broader perspectives, resulting in better problem-solving and more vital collaboration (Pleasant, 2017).

Personal Insight: Growing up between London and Kumasi, Ghana, I felt like a chameleon, constantly adapting to fit in. As a queer teenager, navigating two distinct cultures with their expectations and norms was a constant struggle. In Ghana, the weight of societal disapproval and the fear of persecution were ever-present, casting a shadow over my burgeoning identity.
As I grew older, the strain of suppressing my true self became unbearable. The fear, the hiding, the constant lying—it was exhausting. I remember praying every day not to wake up in the morning, but my prayers were never answered (fortunately!). I'm glad they weren't, as I would not know the power of embracing my whole self. So, I returned to London as an adult, seeking a haven where I could finally be myself.
But even in London, the scars of internalised homophobia lingered. It took time, therapy, and the love of my chosen family to heal those wounds and learn to love and accept myself fully. My chosen family – friends, mentors, and colleagues – embraced me openly. They saw, heard, and understood the complexities of my journey. Through their unwavering support, I discovered the strength and resilience within me, realising that my queerness wasn't a burden but a gift.
Today, I'm not only living my truth but also helping others navigate similar challenges. As a therapist, I've guided countless individuals on their journeys of self-discovery and acceptance.

One client, in particular, stands out. He was grappling with deep-seated homophobia that had been ingrained in him from a young age. He faced discrimination at work, rejection from his family, and, most devastatingly, he harboured a profound self-loathing. Through culturally conscious therapy, we explored the roots of his internalised homophobia, unpacking the societal messages and cultural norms that had shaped his beliefs. Together, we challenged those negative narratives and replaced them with messages of self-love and acceptance. It was a long and arduous journey, but ultimately, he emerged from therapy with a newfound sense of pride, empowerment, and self-worth.
Today, my relationship with my family in Ghana has also evolved. We have found a way to bridge the gap and rebuild our connection through open communication, understanding, and mutual respect. It hasn't been easy, but it's a testament to the power of love, acceptance, and the willingness to grow.
